BORN TO DRUM: COMING SOON!

Women* Drummers International is Happy to Announce:
BORN TO DRUM 2017

JOIN US THIS SUMMER TO CAMP,  OR COME FOR THE DAY …

Born to Drum was birthed as a reunion of women drummers from all over the US and from all over the world. This will be the 11th year that we gather to celebrate culture; to make new friends and rejoice at being with old friends. We come together in community to drum, to share traditional music, art, herstory, and women’s medicine with each other. Join us!

We especially welcome women to come who do not drum, or don’t want to drum all day! The non-drumming classes will include: hands on healing circles, poetry writing, the Mother Peace tarot cards, spirit-sound meditation, grandmother’s council circle, social justice alliance building, breema meditation, herbal medicine, altar making medicine, yoga, sign language, embodied movement, dance classes, singing classes and more.

AND …ONCE AGAIN we have invited an incredible faculty to participate in camp this summer, headlined by the acknowledged fore-mother of the modern women’s drum movement: EDWINA LEE TYLER. Edwina is beautiful woman with an amazing drum herstory. She has drummed all over the United States, Europe and Africa. Many remember Edwina’s riveting and healing performances at the Michigan Music Festival with her group: A Piece of the World. Edwina has appeared with many groups in NYC, such as the Urban Bush Women, with Jawole Zollar, and has also appeared on Broadway.  She is a powerful woman and drummer, and we are DELIGHTED that she will be at camp. We are also bringing ANNETTE AGUILAR from NYC. Annette has been performing all over the country with her band String Beans and is an incredible percussionist!

This summer we are delighted to have several more NEW faculty members at Born To Drum: PETA ROBLES from Peru will be teaching 2 classes in the Peruvian Cajon; CHRISTELLE DURANDY an incredible singer and percussionist will be teaching; also SHAKTI BUTLER will be joining us in the Healing Tent! This summer we also have Q WILSON participating in camp, giving several workshops about *Gender Identity! It’s a whole new world out there folks and BTD is very happy to have Q at camp this summer! And we are so happy that Native drummer APRIL LEA GO FORTH will be joining us once again.

*We are welcoming Women, Women Identified, and Gender non-conforming folks to camp this year. We are very happy to join the conversation about gender identity and in this spirit we are scheduling several workshops at camp so all of us can open our minds and our hearts to a broader way of understanding who we are.

The Born to Drum 2018 Faculty will once again be Maestra drummers, dancers, musicians, artists, writers and healers from ALL OVER THE WORLD:  Congo, Ghana, Peru, Panama, Nicaragua, Harlem, France, Jamaica, US, Native American, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Middle East, West Africa, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and more.
